    Multi-criteria decision analysis for the assessment of non-clinical hospital services: Methodology and case study

    Non-clinical hospital services to support clinical activities, such as the sterilization service and clinical engineering, are an important technology asset in healthcare, and require constant improvement aimed to reduce economic burden and increase quality. The selection of the most effective healthcare service to adopt in a healthcare facility is a multi-criteria decision problem that classical Health Technology Assessment, being mostly focused on medicines, vaccines and medical devices, cannot easily address. Here we present a methodology based on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis allowing a full assessment of non-clinical hospital services and supporting the selection of the most suitable solution in a certain environment. The methodology involves two different panels of experts: the first one includes international professionals and is aimed at selecting the assessment criteria that are relevant to the target service; the second one is a local panel whose members know the needs and peculiarities of the specific healthcare facility. This approach allows the final decision makers to take into account changes and constraints of their environment, but examining criteria that are internationally recognized as of interest. The proposed methodology, tested in a real context of an Italian Local Health Authority, is versatile and can be applied in any context, even out of the healthcare domain, especially if data in the literature are not sufficient to allow comparisons with similar services in different settings.     AHP‐Aided Evaluation of Logistic and Transport Solutions in a Seaport

    The chapter reports on the application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to a strategic decision in the transport sector, concerning the reconfiguration of the railway infrastructure of the seaport of Trieste. The proposed solutions should not only solve some technical and operational problems of the terminal, but they could allow the port to be included in the Trans‐European Network‐Transport Programme (TEN‐T), promoted by the European Union and aimed to develop the Trans‐European Networks of Transport. Accordingly, the selection of the solution with the most promising potential to satisfy the goals of the TEN‐T policy is a fundamental stage of the project. The case study is an actual AHP application to an evaluation process concerning a pre‐feasibility study of strategic solutions in the logistics and transport fields.     Approaches of production planning and control under Industry 4.0: A literature review

    Purpose: Industry 4.0 technologies significantly impact how production is planned, scheduled, and controlled. Literature provides different classifications of the tasks and functions of production planning and control (PPC) like the German Aachen PPC model. This research aims to identify and classify current Industry 4.0 approaches for planning and controlling production processes and to reveal researched and unexplored areas of the model. It extends a reduced version that has been published previously in Procedia Computer Science (Herrmann, Tackenberg, Padoano & Gamber, 2021) by presenting and discussing its results in more detail. Design/methodology/approach: In an exploratory literature review, we review and classify 48 publications on a full-text basis with the Aachen PPC model’s tasks and functions. Two cluster analyses reveal researched and unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model. Findings: We propose a cyber-physical PPC architecture, which incorporates current Industry 4.0 technologies, current optimization methods, optimization objectives, and disturbances relevant for realizing a PPC system in a smart factory. Current approaches mainly focus on production control using real-time information from the shop floor, part of in-house PPC. We discuss the different layers of the cyber-physical PPC architecture and propose future research directions for the unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model. Research limitations/implications: Limitations are the strong dependence of results on search terms used and the subjective eligibility assessment and assignment of publications to the Aachen PPC model. The selection of search terms and the texts’ interpretation is based on an individual’s assessment. The revelation of unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model might have a different outcome if the search term combination is parameterized differently.     Hydraulic and thermal characterization of a family of thermo-hydraulic separators

    Thermal-hydraulic separators (or hydraulic dispatchers) are flow collectors of relatively small size, connecting two or more hydraulic networks; they are mainly used to reduce the hydraulic interference of primary (e.g. heat supply) and secondary (e.g. heat consumer) circuits, thereby simplifying the system analysis, saving energy and operating complex hydraulic networks more safely. Hydraulic dispatchers are key components of modern district heating networks and of building water systems: nonetheless, little is known about their internal flow and temperature distribution and about their off-design performance. The transfer of thermal energy from the primary to the secondary circuit is governed by the secondary-to-primary flow rate ratio and affected by the turbulent mixing within the device. A simple thermal model is commonly used for design purposes: it disregards the actual flow and temperature pattern within the device and relates the inflow and outflow temperature by neglecting the mixing of supply and return streams. This simple approach is potentially inaccurate under certain operating conditions (e.g. relatively high flow rates) and deserves a validation study. Numerical simulations of flow and heat transfer are carried out, for a family of geometrically similar thermal-hydraulic separators under different operating condition. The reported numerical tests show that the aforementioned model is a reliable design tool under most operation conditions. Furthermore, it is verified that the device introduces a relatively modest pressure loss on the connected circuits, in particular when the flow rate ratio is close to one

    The annual International Conference on Production Engineering and Management takes place for the sixth time his year, and can therefore be considered a well - established event that is the result of the joint effort of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and the University of Trieste. The conference has been established as an annual meeting under the Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ by the two partner universities. The main goal of the conference is to provide an opportunity for students, researchers and professionals from Germany, Italy and abroad, to meet and exchange information, discuss experiences, specific practices and technical solutions used in planning, design and management of production and service systems. In addition, the conference is a platform aimed at presenting research projects, introducing young academics to the tradition of Symposiums and promoting the exchange of ideas between the industry and the academy. Especially the contributions of successful graduates of the Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ and those of other postgraduate researchers from several European countries have been enforced. This year’s special focus is on Direct Digital Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0, a topic of great interest for the global industry. The concept is spreading, but the actual solutions must be presented in order to highlight the practical benefits to industry and customers. Indeed, as Henning Banthien, Secretary General of the German ‘Plattform Industrie 4.0’ project office, has recently remarked, “Industry 4.0 requires a close alliance amongst the private sector, academia, politics and trade unions” in order to be “translated into practice and be implemented now”. PEM 2016 takes place between September 29 and 30, 2016 at the OWL University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo. The program is defined by the Organizing and Scientific Committees and clustered into scientific sessions covering topics of main interest and importance to the participants of the conference. The scientific sessions deal with technical and engineering issues, as well as management topics, and include contributions by researchers from academia and industry. The extended abstracts and full papers of the contributions underwent a double - blind review process. The 24 accepted presentations are assigned, according to their subject, to one of the following sessions: ‘Direct Digital Manufacturing in the Context of Industry 4.0’, ‘Industrial Engineering and Lean Management’, ‘Management Techniques and Methodologies’, ‘Wood Processing Technologies and Furniture Production’ and ‘Innovation Techniques and Methodologies
